In short: TabHold has no account, no server of its own and no analytics. Your saved tabs stay on your own device. We do not collect, sell or transfer your data.
There is no sign-up. TabHold keeps the following only in your browser's own storage on this device:
chrome.storage.local — your settings, the status of file backups, a random install ID, and the Pro state, including your Pro license key if you activated one.Automatic snapshots. About every 5 minutes, and only when something changed, TabHold reads the URLs and titles of all tabs in your open normal browser windows and stores them on this device as a snapshot, so you can recover after a crash. Free keeps the last 10 snapshots; Pro keeps 7 days, up to 200. Automatic snapshots never include incognito windows. Snapshots are never uploaded.
Incognito windows. TabHold does not run in incognito windows unless you allow it in Chrome's extension settings (off by default). If you allow it and click the TabHold toolbar button in an incognito window, the tabs of that window are saved on this device like any other save, and stay until you delete them.
None of this is sent to us or to any third party.
TabHold writes a small health record to chrome.storage.sync, under a key that contains a random install ID (a random UUID, not linked to you). The record holds a format version, the total number of saved groups plus Trash items and when that number last changed. It lets TabHold tell a fresh install from damaged data. It contains no titles and no URLs. If Chrome sync is on in your browser, Chrome itself syncs this record to your other devices under your Google account. TabHold does not send it anywhere.
File backup is off until you turn it on. When you do, Chrome asks for the optional downloads permission. TabHold then writes the backup into your browser's download folder (Downloads/TabHold by default):
Downloads/TabHold/latest.jsonDownloads/TabHold/YYYY-MM-DD.json. The last 30 are kept. Older dated files are removed with chrome.downloads.removeFile, and only after TabHold checks that they are its own files.Backup files contain your saved tabs (titles, URLs and favicon addresses) and the save, update and delete times and source of each group. They are ordinary files on your computer; TabHold never uploads them.
Pro is optional. When you activate a license key, and then about once a day, TabHold sends the license key and the Polar organization ID to api.polar.sh to confirm the key is valid. Nothing about your tabs is included. This service is run by Polar; see the Polar Privacy Policy.
Checkout takes place on Polar's website, not inside the extension. Your name, email and payment details are entered there and are not seen or stored by us.
Export (Pro) creates a CSV, Markdown or HTML file in your browser only when you click Export. The file is saved by your browser and is not uploaded.
tabs — to read the titles and URLs of the tabs you save and, for automatic snapshots, of the tabs in your open normal windows (never incognito), and to reopen tabs when you restore.tabGroups — to save tab groups and recreate them with their titles, colors and collapsed state.storage — chrome.storage holds your settings, backup status, Pro state (license key), the random install ID and the sync health record. Saved groups live in IndexedDB, which needs no permission.unlimitedStorage — to keep your saved tabs, Trash and snapshots without a size cap.alarms — to run automatic snapshots, automatic file backups, the daily Pro key check and the daily cleanup of items older than 30 days in the Trash and of other devices' stale health records.downloads (optional) — requested only when you turn on file backup, to write the backup files described above and, with Pro, to remove old dated backups, and to look up and erase TabHold's own entries in Chrome's download history (downloads.search, downloads.erase). Everything else works without it.We do not sell your data, transfer it to third parties, or use it for advertising, credit or any purpose unrelated to TabHold's single purpose. TabHold uses no advertising trackers, analytics or remote code.
Removing the extension deletes all of its browser storage (IndexedDB and chrome.storage). Backup files in Downloads/TabHold stay in your Downloads folder until you delete them yourself. We hold no copy and cannot delete anything on your behalf.
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
